November 15, 2021
Dear Friends,
Sat Nam. In March, 2020 with the threat of the Covid-19 virus spreading worldwide, we began cancelling White Tantric Yoga® workshops with the hope that we could restart them within a few months. Unfortunately, that was not the case and all workshops through 2021 have been postponed or cancelled.
The good news is that with the choice of getting a vaccine, and new medications being developed for Covid 19, restrictions based on Covid 19 for large events are being eased and some organizers have reached out about confirming dates or rescheduling new dates for 2022, which in some places does seem possible. We will continually update our website (www.whitetantricyoga.com) with confirmed workshop dates.
Of equal impact, during this time credible allegations of sexual misconduct and manipulation were revealed about Yogi Bhajan towards students and within the institutions and businesses he supported. After personal inquiries with people who were harmed and those who realized after the fact that they were misled in other than sexual ways, we are recovering from the emotional impact of those realities, and we are looking at White Tantric Yoga® with renewed scrutiny.
We have been taking a deep dive into the subject of Tantra and the subtle body, including what our personal experience has been of White Tantric Yoga®, and the concept of Tantra historically.
A Buddhist friend brought to my attention that Tantra mainly comes from the Buddhist tradition, and the subtle body according to that tradition is an expanded state of consciousness that can be achieved at the time of death. There are teachers who have the ability to open the space to the subtle body or pure expanded consciousness to experience while alive. The good thing is that the Buddhists wrote everything down in the past 2500 years and there is a lot written about this subject. We are studying this and will publish more details of our research at a later date.
What we do know after 50 years of participating in White Tantric Yoga as we know it, is that it has been a tool for personal growth for thousands of people and what participants experience is an expanded state of consciousness during the workshop that positively impacts their lives. That is the subtle body experience. During this meditative practice, participants recognize the awareness that they feel as they participate is different than when they came into the room and different than when they leave the room. Most participants attest that the WTY workshops are life changing. Now I understand that the subtle body is simply a state of expanded consciousness that can be experienced during WTY.
I have participated in WTY since 1971 when I started working with 3HO, and I spoke with Yogi Bhajan when he led the workshops in person, and I created the WTY videos based on his input, together with my experience in video. I had a lot of creative freedom in creating the videos, using my background in television, but the one thing he did say was that the electronic media was relevant to opening that space.
I have mentally gone over as much as I can remember about what he said. One thing I do know is that he was in awe of WTY and sometimes was surprised himself about the realizations he had and how it affected him as well as the participants. He knew he had the ability to open that space, He didn’t talk much about it, he said it was for participants to experience. My observation was that when he sat down to lead it, or when he sat down in front of the camera to record it, he was in an altered state. How that happened, I have no idea.
So where do we go from here? That is the question we (the board of Humanology and Health Science) have been struggling with. We know what he said, we know what we experienced, we know what we are learning about the subtle body. We also know about many people losing trust in the teachings as they have lost trust in the teacher.
We have decided that we will follow the teachings, and to make the WTY meditative experience available for those who want it.
It has taken me a year to write this, and my clarity is still blurry. Like many of you, I have gone through a lot of surprise, anger, tears, confusion, compassion, depression, self-scrutiny, hate and love. There have been days I have wanted to run away and not look back. I can’t believe that I have to deal with this at 79 years old.
In view of all that has transpired I am glad that we have had the time to pause White Tantric Yoga® to reflect, research, and look within. And at the same time, I receive letters continually asking when the workshops will start again.
And so, when we can, we will again share the subtle body meditative experience of White Tantric Yoga® as given on video. WTY is a meditative practice and like all meditative practices it is about the practitioner and their relationship to their own inner being.
One thing I do know is that the right thing is to understand that everyone is different in their experience and their process, and everyone’s experience and conclusion is right for them.
Life IS a workshop.
As I have said before my love has always been meditation. I love sitting and closing my eyes and going to the white light. WTY has given me many opportunities to do that. To not continue to offer it would be a responsibility I do not want. I’ve always said White Tantric Yoga® takes care of itself and all decisions over these last 33 years of video workshops have been done in that consciousness. Because I am not attached to the outcome, I do believe the right thing is what will happen.
Looking forward with love and prayers,
Satsimran Kaur
